Gazette notification to reform the quota system in government jobs issued
The government on 23 July through a gazette notification increased the percentage of merit-based recruitment to 93 percent for all entry posts in government, semi-government, autonomous, semi-autonomous, statutory authorities and various corporation jobs.
According to the notification, the government has fixed 93 per cent of the total posts to be filled from the merit list and 5 percent quota has been kept for children brave freedom fighters, martyred freedom fighters and veterans, one per cent for ethnic minorities and one percent for disabled and third gender.
The notification also states that if eligible candidates are not available from the quota, then the vacant posts will be filled from the merit list.
The new quota system will be followed in the recruitment of employees at all grades to ensure the principle of fairness and representation of disadvantaged groups in the government, semi-government, autonomous and semi-autonomous institutions, statutory bodies and various corporations.
It is said that the gazette notification of the Ministry of Public Administration issued on October 4, 2018 has been repealed.
Notably, the notification will be effective immediately.
It is to be mentioned that on July 21, the Appellate Division overruled the High Court's verdict regarding quota in government jobs and ordered a 7 percent quota - 5 percent for children of freedom fighters, martyred freedom fighters and veterans, 1 percent for national minorities and 1 percent for disabled and third gender people.
Quota for women and backward districts has been abolished in the new gazette notification.
